Updates on Jared's Condition

Well folks, I've gone on a long journey but I'm happy to say "That's the end of that chapter...". My parents have been keeping up with this blog since the very beginning of it all those months ago, and frankly, they're tired. It's a constant worry on their minds; mostly my Mom's... sorry Dad. I guess I can say now that I'm home, it has been a long journey, but I am currently writing this from my basement at my house: I'm home.

Now that I say that if you ALL came over for "just a short visit" I'm sure I would be entertaining you all until I actually left this house. And then of course you would all feel that you needed to welcome me in there and we're back at square one. The specialists at the rehab center also warned me about over-stimulation. They said it would slow down my healing process. So I need to make this very clear, DO NOT stop by without asking us. Not if you had a new car and you wanted to take me for a super-fast drive, NO. Not if you were getting married and for some reason you felt as if you needed my blessing, NO. Not if you had a new baby and you just wanted me to meet them for a quick bit, NO. Keep in mind that if I met everyone who read this blog and learned just one thing about them, I'd be old! That's not to say that we are annoyed that the blog has gotten this much attention, in fact we are positively gleeful that I'm that important to you. That being said what began as being a tool for the destruction of lies about my situation has been turned into really serving your needs. It had to be said. Now I'm sure bad things will happen to me at some point in the rest of my life, but that kinda stuff happens in life, we ALL have to learn to pull our belts tight, hitch up our packs and move on.

That being said I'm sure the memory of Brandon will never leave us, it certainly will never leave me. Sometimes I am quite sure I can still hear his laugh, or see him smile... he's keeping me safe now, I can say that I have my own personal guardian angel. Not many can say that, not many can say they survived a brain injury either. The point is as my parents often tell me, "He's got your 6", and it's true! I can go happily through the rest of my life never afraid 'cause I got someone up there who's pulling for me. Brandon, he'll be close to us for the rest of time, there constantly when you're all alone I know... he'll be there. When you are surrounded by friends... he'll be there. And when I finally graduate, and it's my turn to walk across the stage and get that diploma... well I'm sure he'll be there. So really he'll never leave us, he has made himself immortal... and I, we, will NEVER forget him. So as a final message to him: Brandon, thank you for pulling me through that. It will be hard to go on without you but that's what you'd want, you'd want me to have a happy life full of good memories and as Mom always says, "he's up there kicking our asses!". Finally thank you Brandon, for teaching me so much about life, and sadly death, I'm pretty sure you'd have to look pretty far to find a 17 year old with as much life experience as I have. Thank you Brandon, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.

So I am very sorry to say this, but this will be the last entry for a very VERY long time. Now I was a bit distressed when my parents told me this, but they're right, it's time for us all to get past this and leave it as a memory. I'll write on this the odd time, but take this as a farewell, time to get on with my life. And thank you for being involved and reading this blog and keeping up to date. This is my last chance to thank you all at once so, THANK YOU!!! (And my Mom and Dad thank you too) Well my friends, this is the end of this chapter and at camp we'd probably sing 'Lean On Me' or 'Will Our Friendships Be Unbroken'. So whenever you hum those tunes think of me, and how you are a good person because you helped, you really did. Well I won't say goodbye, I'll say see you later......

Yesterday was very hectic as there was a lot of activity with the different disciplines in updating and setting new goals, schedules, appointments for when Jared will be able to continue his healing at home. Jared was extremely proud that yesterday was the first day that he was able to complete his morning physio by memory and didn't have to check with his binder to see what exercise came next!! Wahoo!

Jared was also glad that he remembered to bring his camera this week and was taking pictures of people that have become a part of his healing team. Along this journey we have met some wonderful people. With today's blustery snow falling, Jared shared the joke that he had heard about the four seasons: ALmost winter, winter, still winter and then.... construction. Drive safe.

I want to apologize for what my father thought, I meant SPIDERMAN, not Superman... sorry Dad ;). I had a regular day with the exception of OT being cancelled. My therapists keep saying that I'm coming close to leaving, but my past history has taught me to not assume anything lest I be disappointed. Because of this, I decide to "not hear" everything they say about leaving. I won't believe I will have left until I'm outside that door, I think that's the safe way of playing it.

My Mom was back in today and as a little time-killer before supper we played some pool. Let's just say things didn't go too well, and it took us quite a while to get ALL the balls. But really, I can't move my right arm very well, at least I have an excuse! All I'm saying is if you were in a pool match for one million dollars; don't call on my mom. Sorry Mom. This is Jared saying once again that your continued support of myself by reading this blog is VERY much appreciated, thanks.

Jared had another great day accomplishing all his activities. The rehab computer was repaired so he was able to check and send some emails this evening. He then played pool with the recreation coordinator.

Jared completed the evening by watching his Superman 2 DVD. We will update again tomorrow night.

Happy Easter everyone !

Jared got to go home and sleep in his own bed this past weekend. He was able to put in his contact lenses using his right hand. His highlight was attending church on Easter Sunday. ALLELUJA ! At the conclusion of the service Jared was presented with his vigil candle which our church congregation has been lighting every Sunday since December 2007.

As a family we express our sincere thanks for your many forms of support and your daily best wishes. Jared is back at the rehab centre reflecting on his most enjoyable weekend.

Hi everyone,

Sorry there was not a post yesterday, but my Mom went back to the apartment very tired. The plan for the Easter weekend is to go away and again we won't be taking the laptop, sorry to all you who religiously look at this blog, I hope you'll understand it's another thing thats always on my Mom's mind. Jared had a full day which included his first session of relaxation training. He said he almost fell asleep! At the end of the day he shared The Remembrance Day Ceremony 2007 at KES home video with some of his therapists. He was hoping that viewing this vedio would enable them some insight into what being a cadet entails.

The evening consisted of listening to Great Big Sea while playing cards. To bed earlier then usual as he was tired tonight.

Jared enjoyed his new program today of neuropsych group training. He also got to reconnect with an acquaintenance who he met at the beginning of his recovery.

His day ended with a great visit from his best friend. Jared also got to meet Lily. She is one of the rehab therapy dogs that come in to visit everyone at the rehab centre. She even has her own ID tag. Cool!

I had a rough morning this morning. I woke up and in just a little while I remembered everything that had happened the day before. The last few days when I woke up I would do my physio exercises which would take up most of my morning. I went for a walk around the floor but all that did was make me feel worse. Eventually my parents called and I talked with them and cried about my situation quite a bit. My talk with my Dad felt good and he said that was what the nurses were expecting, so I could prove them wrong now which I was quite eager to do. I went to my morning sessions, and I was fine until I went to drumming. There a woman was asked if she was going to take her husband anywhere for Easter? She answered, "Home" and my mind which had done well so far keeping off the topic was centered right on it. Home. I felt kinda bad when my Mom came in for lunch and cried some more.

Soon it was 1:00 and my Mom had left to go to the Y, and at a perfect time my psychologist walked in. We talked for a very long time and she made me feel a lot better. She explained it to me very well. She said the current troubles I am fighting through are kind of like a hurricane, and I am a tree on the beach. She said if I was like most people I would choose to be a mighty oak tree which are famed for their un-paralled strength. But she went on to say although an oak tree is strong it is also very rigid and it would not survive a hurricane, it would be blown right over. But if I was a palm tree I would be much more flexible, and bend and sway in the major wind. Come the next morning the oak tree would be blown over but the palm tree would be left standing. So now I am proud to say there is a new poster in my rehab room that states, "I am a palm tree".

After I had psychology I had physiotherapy. There I did something really fun. The Major I think would be really proud of me because I practiced: marching. My Physiotherapist says it would be good for me and it really practiced my arm movement, by the end of physio I was really tired but that was okay because it was now THE WEEKEND!!! It will be a very enjoyable and relaxing one. My parents wish me to inform you that where we will be we won't have an Internet connection so this unfortunately is the last blog update until Monday. I personally wish you the very best weekend and thank you for being worried enough about me to check out this blog.

Today the rehab team meeting was held to discuss Jared's goals (both immediate and the near future). He was most upset hearing that he would not be returning to school after he completed his time at the rehab centre. He misses home and feels totally misunderstood. As parents we are feeling helpless. I guess today was not a good one.

Jared wanted to be sure that we shared his good news from Physiotherapy today. He did all his exercises in the pool today on his own. This included remembering the exercises, getting the proper pool aids and using them correctly.

He is looking forward to tomorrow as a group of the "young" guys are going to get together and go out to a sports event. Jared continues his winning streak in playing cards with his mom.

I had quite a full day today. Even though I only had three appointments, I had quite a few unexpected visitors. I felt kinda bad that I had to keep showing them the door after only a few minutes with them. I guess that's the diplomat (my Dad) in me, I always feel bad for other people's misfortunes. But as my parents had said this truly is a time where its solely for me and my healing, and to disagree would be a thing that would come right back and bite me in the butt although some visits from my teachers were very kind.

I went back to the apartment around 4:30 which in part explains why I'm writing this on a weekday. The next few days look busy because I have a total of six, count 'em SIX appointments. Anyways I should probably go back and get some sleep, I need to be rested.

Jared celebrated his first day off all medications. He is hoping that he won't have to go back on any of them. After a full day of sessions he had lots of energy to beat his mom at cards. They enjoy playing thirty-one. Jared received another parcel in the mail which he enjoyed. Since this is March Break he is looking forward to having scheduled visits with some of his friends.

I woke up this morning rested, but hungry. After having a Beep drink I had a really good talk with my Dad. Eventually we went up to have a complimentary breakfast. Afterwards we went to the gym and after working on my legs on the treadmill, the stepper, and weights I was tired. I had a lot of fun looking at my post last night and I laughed myself at it.

I had learned a lot from a Physiotherapist student back on my first week here too. He took me as his protege and taught me a whole bunch of bicep jokes. Like this one: he told me to ask people whether or not they called a plumber, then when they were confused he said "To take a look at these pipes" and flex. It was really funny.

Make sure you have a good night 'cause tomorrow's a new week (and if you didn't go out last night you'll be really rested for tomorrow though you will hear stories from the people who did take my advice and lived a little. Just a warning.)

Late Friday afternoon I had a visit from two ladies I never met before. They represented a larger group of people who have been watching my progress on this blog. I was presented with framed gift certificates from my favorite restaurants and movie passes. I find it amazing that I have "a great team, superb coaches, and an entire stadium full of spectators."

This morning after I left the Rehab Centre I went to the Army/Navy Surplus store where I got some really neat stuff. Then I waited while my Dad got a haircut. The barber was really impressed that I knew the song 'Freebird' by Lynard Skynard(?spelling?). I had heard the song before on 'Guitar Hero' and it was one of my favorites, especially when it goes "... myyyy Freeeebiiird, yeah". I offer my apologies if you know that same part and I spelt it incorrectly, but give me a break, I've had a brain injury.

Hope you have as good a Saturday night as mine(but if its that good what are you doing at home looking at a computer screen? Go out and live a little.)

On Jared's rehab ceiling, above his bed is where he had Gary place this quote:

"You've got to get up every morning with determination if you're going to go to bed with satisfaction. "

He thought that it should be the first thing he sees and the last thing he sees each night.

This was one of many laminated sayings that he received in the mail today from a caring Coldbrook family. They are posted on all of his bedroom walls, doors, and even in his bathroom.

No blog yesterday because the power was out here at the apartment.
Jared has a full day of sessions but is hoping to go outside for another walk since it isn't raining and the sun is shining. He says Thursdays are his busiest of days. One more day til the weekend!

With it being such a warm day Jared decided to go for a walk this afternoon. We ended up at the Halifax Infirmary, 7.3. Jared was so excited to see his "old home" as he put it and was warmly received by all. The nursing staff had lots of questions for him which he could answer. They were also glad to see him use his right arm. We truly appreciate the teamwork at the Halifax Infirmary.

Was talking with Jared at 8AM and he was up and ready for the day. He enjoys the pool therapy. After lunch we had a meeting with two members of his team. The meeting was held to gather ideas and goals that Jared feels are important to him. Then a planned schedule is devised and organized to enable Jared to continue meeting these goals once leaving rehab, keeping in mind he still needs proper rest and time. The staff constantly remind all of us about patience. The recovery process in brain injuries are long and slow for the patients. We will take whatever time is needed to recover together.

I was up before Mom and Dad today and did my physio before breakfast. We ate breakfast in our hotel room. Then we had a visit from some high ranking friends! It felt good to see them again. Checked out and then it was time to eat again!! Lucky Ho Ho was a good place to eat and the food tasted great.

I will return to rehab later on this evening to get ready for week #four. Hopefully I will be able to go home soon and sleep in my own bed.

My day began early as usual . After watching two NCIS episodes my mom arrived. We went back to their apartment and picked up my dad.

Right after checking up on my email we went to Moores, Clothing for Men. I got to enjoy a completely new experience because I had never bought a suit before. After buying a suit, two shirts, two ties, a pair of pants, a new reversible belt, and a nice new pair of shoes I left with a big smile on. We then went to Montana's where I enjoyed a rib lunch. Lucky enough for us, a Coldbrook couple who knew me bought the meal for us. What a pleasant surprise.

We then checked in to the hotel where I rested during the afternoon after a busy morning.

Will update everyone (and apparently there are a lot of you) tomorrow. Coming from me, have a good Saturday night, I'm sure I will.

Jared enjoyed his drumming therapy today which was an unscheduled surprise. The rhythm that the residents made was infectious. He also received some other homework to be done sometime during the weekend. TGIF! Had a relaxing evening and is looking forward to another stay at a local hotel.

Jared is enjoying the pool therapy for his right arm. Today he was floating on his back with the help of the staff to accomplish some of these exercises. He loves the water. Jared slept in an extra hour this morning. We rented a movie and took quite a few walks. Today Jared got to eat brekkie at the Smitty's around the corner from rehab. The sidewalks were dry and the sun was shining so we walked. Awesome day. He earned a nap in the afternoon and hopefully will have another good night's sleep.

Jared had a full morning with various therapies but feels very happy today (could it be the weekend)! He continues to read the blog when time permits and says he "feels very loved". After lunch Jared worked on the computer updating his resume. He was glad to get that completed and off his list of things to do. After his physio this afternoon and weather permitting he hopes to take a walk outside for some fresh air.

Jared did the walk to the VG in the tunnel two times today. He would prefer the outdoors but when the weather doesn't cooperate he can still exercise.

Jared's days are becoming more and more demanding as he becomes stronger. Today his TA took him for a walk through the tunnels over to the VG site. A medical maze indeed! He is becoming comfortable in his surroundings and is starting to initiate some requests of his own.

The sun was shining in Halifax today and Jared got to for a nice leisurely walk outside. He says he can smell spring in the air . We hope he can! This afternoon was another session of testing and then some goal setting. The nurses told him that he has put on another two pounds. This evening he'll walk again after supper and then some R&R.

Jared schedule was constantly changing today. He started a preliminary assessment that will be spread over the three days . This will determine where his strengths and/or weakness are. In the meantime he enjoys his physio and speech classes returning with determination to accomplish his tasks at hand. Today a long distance phone call put a huge smile on his face and a hug around his heart.

Jared told us he had the best sleep last night as we were altogether under one roof.
He enjoyed two long walks out in the fresh air and enjoyed a good plate of chicken alfredo.

Today began early as usual. It would turn to be a really exciting day because my father had us booked at a hotel. As time passed on I was surprised to find out I didn't have a T.A. Around this time I called my Mom the first of many times but it always came up as busy. I would later find out that my Mom was actually trying to call me but it just so happened that it was everytime I tried to call her.

Just before I finally got a call from my Mom I luckily got a call from my history teacher. I would have talked with her longer but I really wanted my Mom to call. Luckily she did call sooner than later and was also surprised to find out I didn't have a T.A.. After about an hour and a half she came in to visit me. Eventually my dad stopped by the hospital.

Today began early for me. At approximately 7:50 a.m. my Occupational Therapist entered my room to watch my usual morning routine. Usually I'll be dressed by the time my T.A. comes in. She just watched and suggested some ways I could use my right hand more. My T.A. came in and I had my breakfast.

At 10 o'clock I had my Physiotherapy class. Today I went to the pool with two Dalhousie students who had been with me since the very beginning came up to escort me down. Luckily I had some swimming trunks ready to go. The pool was really warm and really fun. A shower and a drum lesson later it was time for lunch.

The afternoon consisted of a lot of time with my parents (unfortunately my mom didn't pick me up because she feels sick today) and a fair amount of surfing the web.

I think I will go to bed tonight with a big smile on. It was a good week.

February 14th was a full day spent with his physio and O.T. teams. During supper hour Jared enjoyed a visit from Aunt Sherry who has been faithfully doing his laundry.

Jared felt tired after his physio this morning but enjoys the therapists and their challenges. He enjoys his meals at the rehab. However this afternoon he felt discouraged and frustrated after his occupational therapy session. He was resting for a while before supper as he is beginning to understand that all his hard work tires him out. Visiting is still not on the agenda until he becomes stronger.

Everyday Jared continues onward and upward on his road to recovery. Today occupational therapy taped him doing some activities. In three weeks they will tape him again to show him how much he will have improved. This afternoon he also watched the Remembrance Day Ceremony at KES which his father had videoed for him. He enjoyed it and misses his friends.

Jared called us early and asked us to come in as his T.A. had been rescheduled to someone else. We decided to stay inside out of the nasty weather and had family time together watching the latest Pirates of the Carribean movie. Jared has answered a lot of questions today as the Rehab team continues their admitting process. He is learning about how the Rehab centre works and the layout of the building. Schedules are continually being updated as each member of the team signs Jared up for their speciality. Rest is also scheduled into his daily routine as this is also important for his full recovery.

Great news today. Jared continues his recovery at the Rehab Centre. It is bittersweet as they say, great to be moving forward to a full recovery but yet hard to leave all the love and supportive care that all of us received at the QE2 Hospital - 7.3 unit.

Jared worked hard again today to strengthen his voice and arm muscles. With his hard work comes an ever increasing appetite. Jared is proud that he has regained ten pounds. He also

Jared started off his day with waffles for breakfast! He worked hard all morning and had a much needed rest this afternoon. Still tired after this afternoon's physio, he was in bed right after supper. NCIS tonight.

Jared had a busy day with his recovery team. This afternoon, he walked over to the Veteran's Wing where he rented a WW 2 movie. He had a visit with friends and received food gifts consisting of oranges, fudge, and jube-jubes. Jared is exhausted from all his exercises and food.

He just called his mother on the telephone and wished her a good night !

"Hi everyone. I went to the museum today. My Therapeutic Assistant took me to the Museum of Natural History which is located across the street from the hospital".

Jared walked both up and down the stairs today to his physio session. He also made a stop at the Neuro ICU unit to show the nurses just how far he has come. They were thrilled to officially meet and talk with Jared. Exhausted after all his work, he rested until the FOOD arrived!

Jared went outside today for the first time since his accident. He was excited as he saw that there was a museum across the street and asked when he could go. He also went to the gym for physio. Rest time, more physio and speech and then Pizza for supper. Lord of the Rings was playing tonight when we left the hospital. Jared is getting his strength back.

Finally, as promised, Jared got to have his neck brace removed today and was smiling when I first greeted him this morning.
After bathing, dressing, speech, and some occupational therapy he rested while watching Lord of the Rings. Lunch arrived which consisted of, to his delight, a hamburger and french fries! It is so great to watch him eat.... lots!

Family time and then quiet time as scheduled throughout the rest of the hospital.

Dietary gave the OK for the full meal deal today. Jared's first request was a big crunch sandwich from KFC and he ate all of it !!!! A team meeting was held today. Jared's schedule, starting tomorrow,will become more demanding as he continues his journey to meet both short and long term goals, as outlined by the team. With his hard work he will continue to need his rest.

Jared was brighter today. When he saw that he was able to watch a DVD, he replied "awesome". He increased his daily walks to routinely after his meals. He requested "waffles" but the nurses said to wait a little while longer. Every day there is something to be thankful for.

Jared seemed to relax and enjoy his day. Yesterday he communicated a desire to watch TV and tuned in again this evening. Jared has acquired ( from friends ) a DVD player and some of his favourite movies ( including Star Wars ). Tonight we received permission from the nursing staff to watch movies. Combined efforts and communication with everyone is most important in order to initiate/discontinue what works for his recovery.

Jared now walks without assistance and speaks in short sentences. He enjoys eating all the puddings we bring to him in the hospital and butterscotch appears to be his favourite. We have a family meeting scheduled for next week. Jared's progress is nothing short of amazing.

Jared had an extra busy day. He was up walking quite a bit and his gait has improved immensely. Jared is confused about "time" so when he is hungry he wants food immediately. Once again the nursing and support teams are unlimited in their support and knowledge. Team work has a whole new meaning and we are so thankful for them.

Jared had a very busy day with his therapeutic assistant and they do work very well together. One nurse who was off duty, returned to work this week and she was amazed at how much progress he has made. She commented to us on Jared's overall rate of recovery!

Mealtimes are not a problem for our Jared. Other than him having to wait until the hot food becomes coolier, he is doing great. He can drink and feed himself the puddings but needs help with the main meal. We went out and acquired some of his favourite puddings, jellos and applesauce to have on hand. When he wants to eat he wants it immediately!

At the end of the day, and many times throughout, we let him know how much he is loved.

Jared continually improves. Now that he is awake for slightly longer periods of time, this enables the support staff to complete their daily tasks with him. Ginger ale was added to his menu today and he drank quite a bit; with Jared initiating his need to drink. We left him resting comfortably tonight.

Jared is having some medication adjustments. This will help him organize his internal clock for day and night. Another shower today which seems to make him feel better or it could be that he is wearing his favourite Simpson shirt!

Jared had a peaceful day. On both visits to the hospital he was resting each time. His caregivers informed us that he ate all his meals, went for his routine walk and communicated that he wished to sit up in his chair. For this we are truly thankful.

Jared communicated that he wanted a shower and with assistance he was able to have one. He was irritable and frustrated this afternoon so we were asked to leave. Even as parents we have to be careful not to over stimulate him. This evening he went for a walk which helped to expend some extra energy.

Jared's routine today consisted of breakfast and a short walk. Next he met speech and communication.
We feel he finds these sessions both physically and emotionally draining as he wants back to bed where he immediately goes to sleep.

Great strides are possible because our son is being provided with time and rest. His medical team caution all of us that we must not over stimulate him.

We visited the QE2 Hospital today and Jared continues to eat everything. What a sight to watch him drink juice from a glass all on his own!.

The nursing team continue to recommend and emphasize his need for complete rest.

We opted to stay home and not go into the QE2 hospital due to the weather. We can do this knowing that he is receiving excellent medical care.

Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragedy occurring in Bathurst, New Brunswick this past Saturday.

We think about them as we travel our own path of recovery. Eventually we learn what is important , what brightens our lives and what is of little concern.

Great news to report. Jared passed his swallow test today, so therefore they were able to remove his feeding tube.

This afternoon, Jared will be meeting again with his physio team.

Jared was up walking with his physio team today. He moves along slowly but each day he grows stronger.
Jared communicated that he was experiencing some pain this evening. From this information his nurse adminsistered some medication.

Jared is staying longer in his chair and is responding to simple commands from his nurses.

In speaking with Jared's nurse, we learned that he spent most of the day sitting up.

Jared had a persistent cough so as a precaution they sent him for a chest x-ray.

Today we attended Brandon's Kings Edgehill School Memorial Service. It was a very moving tribute to his life.

Better news to report on Jared this evening.

Two nurses were able to assist Jared to stand beside his bed this morning. He wasn't able to stand for very long but what a huge accomplishment.

Between the standing and the physio exercises Jared had an exhausting day. Resting is still critical for him to heal.

Tonight he is resting comfortably.

Jared was moved to a 7th floor private room. He spent a very restless night and day. Unfortunately he is not sleeping well.

The nursing team removed Jared's oxygen nasal tube last night. However within 10 minutes his monitor oxygen levels decreased and his nasal tube was returned.
Jared had a very restless last night.

As of 5:00 pm this evening, Jared was resting quietly.

It is imperative that Jared requires complete rest at this time. When it is appropriate for visitors we will advise.

As his strength improves, he is able to sit in a chair for extended periods.

He is awake longer and his nurse assures us that Jared is not experiencing any pain.

Jared is doing great breathing on his own and the doctors won't have to replace him with a breathing tube.

Spoke with Jared's nurse John who plans to place our son a chair bed this afternoon.

We had a short visit with Jared this afternoon. The nurses tell us that Jared is tired and needs his rest today.

We arrived at the QE2 hospital this morning to check Jared's progress.

He had a peaceful night and this afternoon they removed the brain tube permanently from his head.

The Ortho department has changed their decision in removing the neck collar. They decided to leave the collar on for the next 6-8 weeks to ensure his best recovery.

From what we understand Jared is no longer on sedation or pain medication.

They plan to place Jared in a chair again this afternoon, which helps his breathing.

We thank everyone for their support and love.

Jared opened his eyes in response to Jane's voice today and is also moving more of his right side. They are planning to take off his neck collar as soon as the ortho department reviews his latest xray. Probably tomorrow.

The nurses had Jared out of bed and sitting up in a chair this afternoon. Each small progress is such a milestone for us.

This morning at 06:00 a.m the doctors disconnected Jared's brain tube. At noon they reduced the amounts of drugs being administered to assess his condition.

Good news, Jared opened his eyes a few times and Jane assured him he was going to be OK. She explained that he was in a large hospital and everyone was taking good care of him. Jane asked him to relax and get some rest. Jared moved his shoulders around as he appeared to be in discomfort from being on his back.

We know that our son is getting the best possible medical care here at the QE2 and we wish to thank everyone for their love and support.

Being Sunday we felt that every church across Nova Scotia was praying for our son Jared.

We visited with Jared and his nurse Margaret at 7:00 pm and she informed us that the doctors decreased the use of Jared's brain tube. This is encouraging news. We understand that tomorrow they plan to reduce his medication which may result in Jared doing more on his own.

The medical staff directed us that Jared needs complete rest and recommend no outside visitors.

The doctors had a real good look at Jared this morning, cat scan and all. There is still a fair bit of fluid and pressure around the brain, so they have decided to leave well enough alone, and leave him in the induced coma. Gary and Jane will be monitoring things with the medical staff (who have been fabulous this week).

Gary and Jane were very touched by the Candlelight Vigil in Windsor last night. They both attended, and were touched by the caring and concern of everyone, in particular the students. The younger folks have created a special Facebook site in memory of Brandon and Jared, and they are now working on a special paper cranes (origami). The idea of the cranes is that there is a story that if you make 1000 cranes, you will receive a miracle.We are all praying for a miracle, each in our own way, so stay tuned for other updates.
